Split personalities

heart.jpg“Heart of Fire” by Kat Martin
Sheridan and I were at the bookstore near the RMB offices the other day (this was before the delivery of our Patricia Gaffney books) and trying to decide what to read. Thin Pale Scary Lady floated like a wraith from behind the counter, and handed me the latest Kat Martin book. I must confess, I’ve liked a lot of Kat Martin books in the past, but her new books have left a decided chill factor (more on that later). But not knowing the delight which was lying in store for me (i.e “To Have And To Hold”) I thought, what the heck, I have nothing to lose. Except possibly my appetite, time, and hair from excessive tugging.

It’s a madhouse in here!

silk.JPG“Silk and Steel” by Kat Martin
So if you’re in the mood for a pretty dark chocolate romance with lots of angst and soap opera worthy plots, why not try “Silk and Steel”? There’s little (if any) humour here though, so don’t expect any cuter critter pets that could come only from Jennifer Crusie, or madcap capers a la Janet Evanovich’s “Stephanie Plum” series. Yup, it’s pretty much a cocktail of depression, drama and danger. So if your interest’s piqued, dive in, loves!

I never promised you a rose garden

heartless.jpg“Heartless” by Kat Martin
I love books which feature correspondence between the hero and heroine. It’s the idea that someone can fall in love with you without even having met you, based solely on what you’ve written. All I need is for Gerard Butler to read this blog and fall madly in love with me and I’m set. The best example which springs to mind is “My Sweet Folly” by Laura Kinsale, which had the best prologue ever written in my opinion, featuring a series of letters written by the hero to the heroine. I wept buckets during the prologue, but unfortunately the rest of the book never lived up to that first chapter.

Something wicked this way comes

alt='wickedl.gif'“Wicked Promise” by Kat Martin
I was clearing out the bookshelves in my RMB office the other day, to make way for the explosion of books which seems to have come in recent months. When you start to discover books tucked away in your underwear drawer, something needs to be done my friend. (Sheridan and Mimi are also presently AWOL, after an unfortunate incident yesterday involving Sheridan’s Chrysler Building tower of books, an unsuspecting Mimi who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and subsequent urgent need for a forklift.) Sandwiched between some of my books was my old copy of “Daddy Long Legs,” which I had read and loved when I was younger. Hence, being in the mood for a slightly OTT book featuring an older guardian hero and his innocent ward, but with decidedly not PG-13 tastes any longer, I decided to reread “Wicked Promise” by Kat Martin.

I ain’t saying she’s a gold-digger

Kat Martin's Perfect Sin“Perfect Sin” by Kat Martin

But she kinda is. Yes our dear readers, the Heroine is an archeologist, interested in the sand, the sun and dirt (i.e. things which do not interest me) and Cleopatra’s necklace (i.e. undivided attention obtained here). For all you history buffs out there and lovers of the HBO series Rome (oh Mark Anthony, this land is available ANYTIME for your conquering hot HOT self anyday), this is the famed necklace given by said Mark Anthony to Cleopatra. Sadly, Randall Clayton, the Duke of Beldon fails to measure up to the spectacular piece of meat that is Mark Anthony (again my love, anytime. ANYTIME.) but this could be because he was struck on the head by author Kat Martin by the dreaded “SNAG” wand that truly should BE buried in the depths of the world’s most active volcano. Sensitive New Age Guy my perfectly formed ASS. [Side Note: No no Lola, don't worry. This isn't another raniew. I promise.]
