That’s MISTER Tofu to you

“Gideon (The Nightwalkers, Book 2)” by Jacquelyn Frank

In the second installment of Ms Frank’s new series, we read all about the most powerful of Ancients, a handsome silver haired fox known only as Gideon. Revered for his power and reserve, Gideon serves as a Healer Demon in the Nightwalker world when we first meet him, then, baby daddy to Magdelegna in the end. Though I am not quite jumping out of my seat to reach for that marker to write Gideon’s name on (what available space there is left on) my body, Ms Frank crafts a world so intricate that you can’t help but be sucked into the war between the Demons and the Necromancers while simultaneously being intrigued by Damien, the Vampire Prince. Damien. How you disappointed me with your association with JASMINE. You should have kicked her off your castle and staked her at midday! Tis by a hair’s breath (and the fact that I recently had my walls painted) that I did not hurl your book across my bedroom. Bah!!!

But now, let us speak of Gideon. Gideon puts a whole new spin on the term “cradle snatching” as he falls hard for someone almost 700 years his junior, and whom he had seen blossom from a young child to one hot mama with dangerous womanly curves. Now you all know my heart already to one cradle snatcher and so sadly, Gideon has lost out on the best prize he will ever have in his entire (fictional) life. Me. Now we find out that Gideon and Magdelegna (a powerful Mind Demon (who has powers similar to a supremely empathetic person)) have much history together - nine years ago, Magdelegna had found Gideon in her garden, staring up at the moon, fighting himself and his overpowering lust while in the throes of heat. Or you know, the male demon version of it brought on by the two moons Beltane and Samhein. But before Magdelegna is able to experience the full, hard (and broad) length of Gideon’s power first hand, Gideon manages to summon his legendary control and snaps at Magdelegna, calling her a child and disappearing into the night. Magdelegna is further humiliated when she discovers that in order to slake his lust, Gideon had started stalking a human female (which as you know, is a big no-no in the demon world), thus forcing Jacob The Sexy Enforcer to stop him. Appalled by his slip, Gideon exiles himself until he is beseeched to tide Bella (Magdelegna’s BFF) through her dangerous pregnancy.

He is thus faced with Magdelegna’s (righteous) hostility for a lengthy period until he engages her in a confrontation and the two find out that they are in fact, demon mates and the two find themselves Imprinted (which means they start being able to talk to each other without any IDD charges, see through each others eyes, and feel each other’s emotions). It is no surprise that this whole “Imprinting” process comes with a hellofalot of sex which truth be told, was pretty goddamn steamy in this book. I enjoyed the moments when Gideon breaks through his icy aloof reserve (i.e. he wills the bug that crawled up his ass to die) to interact with Magdelegna outside a senior/junior, mentor/mentee relationship. Oh alright I’m talking about the sex again. So sue me. Gideon’s concern for Magdelegna borders on tenderness and it is kinda sweet but in all, Gideon’s book is kinda like boiled tofu without any salt, then blanched in more tasteless water, served up with … I don’t know. Cardboard.

It is no surprise that Noah, Magdelegna’s HOT (no pun intended) Fire Demon brother (who happens to also be the King of Demons (HAAAWT.)) is less than pleased about the Imprinting and though initially voices much concern about Magdelegna’s extreme version of a May/December romance, eventually comes around to the idea of having a Healer Demon in the family. Sadly though, I thought that the driving plot of “Gideon” belonged mostly to Jacob and Bella, and their baby. When Bella is brutally and savagely attacked, Jacob goes all sexy vengeful on his enemies, vowing total destruction on those that dared to come into his house to attempt to kill his family. That was kinda hot. Plus, when Jacob summons hundreds of petals to come raining down on his beloved while he tenderly kisses her, I swear I nearly passed out from an overdose of sweetness and the all consuming rage of jealousy. Jacob’s overprotective nature as a father and husband is truly delightful to read and really is the highlight of this book (sad as that may seem but I choose to see it as a silver lining in the tofu darkness).

So for those of you following this series, you might want to give this one a quick scan to absorb whatever Jacob goodness you can find. Lingering is unnecessary ladies because sexy Noah’s on his way and he’s a chunk of deliciously marinated beef.

Damien is pretty hot but Jasmine really made reading his book incredibly uncomfortable and annoying. Totally needs to get over herself pronto!
