Well, hello cowboy

“Long Hard Ride” by Lorelei James
You are cordially invited to Ripmybodice’s annual summer fundraiser in aid of Ladies Who Love Louboutins But Lack Liquidity. To urge you to donate generously to this worthy and extremely self-serving cause, we have planned a spectacular and elegantly tasteful gala, entitled: Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.

Let us now expand a bit on the inspiration behind this summer jamboree. Having read Lorelei James’ cryptically titled “Long Hard Ride,” (Whatever could it mean?) the RMB girls have been assured that men in the West are indeed alive and extremely wild. Set in the glittering world of rodeo (a world that has been far removed from us given that the closest we have ever gotten to it is ordering a Rodeo Cheeseburger from Burger King), our introduction to the world of non-Diana Palmer cowboy heroes has been startling indeed. Mostly because they are not escapees from Planet Jackass.

Apparently they make men dominating in Wyoming. Colby McKay is the No. 2 rodeo rider on the circuit and hell on wheels (and apparently on a woman too, wowee!) Which leaves Lola to wonder, why should I settle for No. 2 when I can have the No. 1 cowboy in America, whoever he may be. (Unless it’s Clint Eastwood, then I’ll pass.) Being hott and extremely scrumptious, he’s the target of buckle bunnies who persistently try to come on to him and his buddies, Trevor and Edgard. Along comes Channing Kincaid, city-girl who’s along for the ride as the rodeo makes its way around the country. Colby would dearly love to introduce Channing to the anvil in his pants, and so strikes a bargain with her that she’ll travel around the country being the plaything of him and his 2 amigos. In exchange, he’ll show her a real good, non-Hallmark Channel time.

Obviously La Lola is single-handedly responsible for setting the feminist movement back to the Stone Age, because all I can say is, where do I sign up?! Colby is sweet and sexy and yeah, he has this uncomfortable thing about sharing Channing with his mates, but nobody’s perfect. What about all those guys who have long nose hair huh? Isn’t that a far more grievous crime, hmmmm? And he has this endearing habit of calling Channing “shug.” Ok at first I didn’t think it was quite so cute, because who the hell would want to be called “sharg.” But then I was informed by Sheridan that it was to be pronounced “shoog” as in, short for “sugar.” That little misunderstanding cleared up, I am again ready to saddle up and ride out. It’s a hard job but someone’s got to do him, errr… I mean it.

If you like your books hot and chilli spicy, look no further than “Long Hard Ride.” C’mon really, on the title ALONE, you should know. Not recommended to those who are adverse to threesomes in their romances, so you have been warned. Sure, I guess Channing sometimes reminded me a bit too much of one of those adapters which have a lot of sockets so that they can accommodate more plugs, but hey, it’s only fiction right? In some ways, “Long Hard Ride” seems a lot like the Men of August series by Lora Leigh, but less icky. I guess it had something to do with the teeny detail that Colby and his 2 friends weren’t you know, related and all that. Because dude, Men of August gave new meaning to brotherly love, let me tell you that.

Colby eventually realises that he wants to be the only cowboy riding Channing’s range, and that he doesn’t want Channing to be doing the mattress two-step with anyone else but him. It is definitely no hardship for a forceful cowboy to lay down the law and show his possessive side. Or his front or back side, really I am not picky at all.

Guests to our fundraiser will be happy to know that we have rented a mechanical bull especially for this occasion, and that whoever can remain on the bull the longest will be able to go behind the barn with Sven, our Scandinavian cowboy. (If he complains that the chaps are chaffing him, just remind him that dress-up is part of his contract and that he’s supposed to be exposed to American culture). So strap on your Gucci cowboy boots, grab a rhinestone pink Stetson and come prepared to lasso yourself a broncin’ buck. Please give generously!

Special thanks go to Sayuri, for introducing us to the wild and magical world of the McKay brothers and their unique brand of cowboy love. Yeehaw!

This was only a 3-star read for me. There were too many loose plot threads and general weirdness. But Colby was a sweetheart.

The later books get better, right? I would consider continuing the series if there were more M/M and less angst.

Sayuri is a great book pimp, isn’t she? :)
