Re: “Lady Sophia’s Lover”
Thank you for listening to my cries. I must say I despaired wondering whether holding the press conference was a bad idea. I consulted the stars, my psychic, my tea leaves and even got Mimi to do tarot card readings for me. Then I decided to go by faith and by faith I was renewed in my faith for you! Alright that didn’t make sense but girlfriend, if I could hug you right now, I would! Except I think you filed a restraining order once and though I’m not sure if it had expired yet, I think I had better not risk it.
The book was a refreshing change from the usual broody/tortured Alpha Hero fighting his attraction to Spunky Fiesty Heroine. Well alright there was still the usual broody/tortured Alpha Hero in the from of Sir Ross whose ex-wife died in labor with their unborn baby which Sir Ross blames himself for, and you have the Spunky Fiesty Heroine in the form of Lady Sophia. But nevertheless, a refreshing change! I loved how you made Sophia this strong vengeful woman who uses her smarts and her ample charms to seduce Sir Ross for the sole purpose of breaking his heart later, never mind how we all know that the heartbreaker normally turns out to be the heartbroken or the seducer becomes the seduced or the night becomes the day, or the…wait a minute. Okay that didn’t make sense either but I’m so happy so forgive me my babble! Oh Lisa! *hug via the wonders of the fax machine!* I enjoyed reading about how Sophia seems to be the only woman that can manage Sir Ross and I thought the stolen kisses between them, and the almost but not quite sexual encounters between the two of them were steamy hot.
Thank you also for throwing in the whole “even though I loved my ex-wife, it wasn’t the same as between you and I” speeches/thoughts by Sir Ross in here and there in the book; it made the whole “he had an ex-wife that he loved dearly” thing easier to swallow. Plus the whole fact that she was frail and kinda weak and appealed to his protector side (and not his possessive growly manly loving side) also helped. It was as if you were writing this book for me! But yet, not really.
Sir Ross is utterly charming as the alpha dog of the police force in London and he is instantly attracted to Sophia the second she shows up in his office applying for the position as his assistance. We know this because his pants pitched a tent from under the desk during her interview session. Naturally, she is hired for the job as his assistant, and is loved by all the runners at Bow Street, much to the chagrin of Sir Ross who wants to be the only tent pitcher in the land. When Sir Ross is unfortunately shot during his pursuit of a dangerous criminal and his doctor offers Sophia a position as his assistant, and Ross growls out “she’s mine” before promptly passing out from the pain and loss of blood, I all but did a little dance around my room while cheering “growly man growly man!”. Because I kinda like growly possessive Alpha Heroes. You can tell huh?
Ooh Ooh and when Sir Ross attacks Sophia’s previous spineless twat of a lover, warning him in no uncertain terms to stay away from his woman, I nearly went into a dead faint and Lola and Mimi had to hold their miniature Hello Kitty portable battery operated fans near my face to revive me.
Eventually of course, Sophia confesses her initial devious plan to Sir Ross, along with another transgression of hers. Oh Lisa, I cannot tell you how fantastic it is to read a book where the Hero doesn’t go into a sulky frenzy resulting in the Heroine having to grovel through pages and pages of the book, until the Hero realizes the error of his ways. Instead, you have Sir Ross who “still wanted her; (who) would forgive her anything, even murder. He loved her more than honor, even more than his pride”, going to her even though she had kept the truth from him. That was verbatim by the way, without the book in front of me.
Lisa, Lisa, you have renewed my strength and my faith in you. For that, I shall continue reading your books until the very end, and try to be more forgiving and understanding about Prince Nikowhatever in “Prince of Dreams” and Emmawhatever. For your notice and attention, starting a book with the Hero having a ”sudden and uncontrollable erection” is always a good way to kick off the book I always say because really it sets the tone. The tone being “good things ahead”. Again, if I could pat you on the back, I would. In fact, because we are now friends again (BFFs you and I!), I am going to reinstate your security clearance to our offices and put your image back on our shrine to the Romance gods.

I love this one too. And I love Kleypas’ retort to someone who whined on Amazon that there are too many sex scenes - “That’s why I didn’t name it Lady Sophia’s Platonic Friend.” And I gotta get me one of those bouncy chairs.

Ooh yeah the bouncy chair! Am still having trouble trying to figure out how the chair looks like and how it works. Oh well…guess I’ll just have to read and re-read the scene until I figure it out (for tenacity is my middle name)!
